As part of the Foster Care Quality Improvement Project, The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) released the California Guidelines for the Use of Psychotropic Medication with Children and Youth in Foster Care. The new guidelines create a shared understanding of oversight and monitoring of psychotropic medication practices for both child welfare services and mental health services. The guidelines set expectations for physicians, social workers, children and youth, parents, caregivers, Tribal members, and all other psychotropic medication stakeholders to collaborate in strengthening the oversight and monitoring of psychotropic medications.
