Emerging Leadership Series
Internalizing Cultural Responsiveness for Far-Reaching Child Welfare Practice Change
Added July 17th, 2025 by the Academy for Professional Excellence
Emerging Leadership Series
The Emerging Leadership Series Curricula is designed to support the professional development of future leaders within child welfare agencies. This training series is intended to help build the leadership skill set of staff and introduce and explore topics which will support them in successfully advancing into leadership roles. Learners attend the full 5 day series, which is delivered in the following sequence: Foundation Day (Half Day) Module 1: Developing Self Awareness (Full Day) Module 2: Supporting a Team Culture (Full Day) Module 3: Supporting the Transfer of Learning (Full Day) Module 4: Bringing it All Together (Full Day) In order to support the transfer of learning, it is recommended that learners participate in coaching (with a coach, a supervisor, etc) after each module to discuss what they have learned and how to integrate it into their practice.
Internalizing Cultural Responsiveness for Far-Reaching Child Welfare Practice Change
This series was developed to discuss cultural responsiveness as the foundation for all social work practice. It is intended to provide an environment for learners to process material, get feedback on their ideas and how to move it forward in practice. The format of this delivery is facilitative discussion where the learners can be explorative and self-reflective in their thoughts and experiences. It also serves as a space for practical application of what they are learning as they advance in their work.
The teaming between new workers, seasoned workers and supervisors is intentional to ensure that all levels of organizations are represented and are able to learn from each other. The curriculum will also strategically embed the opportunity for coaching sessions to encourage the learners to have next steps related to their individual learning.

IP-CANS in Supervision: Coaching Staff towards Practice Integration
IP-CANS in Supervision: Coaching Staff towards Practice Integration (previously Module C) is a dynamic, one-day workshop designed for managers and supervisors who guide social workers, mental health plan clinicians, juvenile probation staff and CFT facilitators in their use of the IP-CANS in child welfare and/or mental health practice. Through hands-on activities and real-world scenarios, leaders will explore how to coach staff in integrating IP-CANS into CFT processes and case planning. This training also prepares participants to navigate the upcoming Tiered Rate Structure and highlights the deep interconnection between assessment, teaming and service delivery. By building leadership capacity and alignment, this course enhances the overall quality of child welfare case management services. It is strongly recommended that participants complete another IP-CANS training prior to enrollment.
